Unlocking 5GBASE-T Potential
In September 2016, the NBASE-T Alliance introduced the IEEE 802.3bz specifications, enabling 5GBASE-T to operate on existing copper cabling infrastructure. So, what does 5GBASE-T offer? It brings Wi-Fi 6 compatibility to Cat 6 installations, provided the Alien Limit Signal-to-Noise Ratio (ALSNR) is within acceptable limits. ALSNR, a metric based on alien crosstalk, attenuation, and other variables, assesses a channel’s ability to handle interference and reliably achieve 5 Gb/s speeds.
Since Cat 6 remains the dominant choice for copper cabling in most LAN environments, a shielded system paired with Cat 6 STP patch cords offers the best of both worlds: higher speeds above 1 Gbps at a lower cost. In densely packed setups, such as fully populated 48-port switches, space constraints can make network maintenance tasks—like moves, adds, and changes (MACs)—challenging. To fit into tight spaces, we offer snagless solutions like EZ-Patch and Arch-Latch, which smoothen network maintenance and enhance efficiency.
For those seeking a step beyond 1G performance without jumping to 10G, HCI’s Cat 6 STP Patch Cords offer dependable, 5 Gbps-ready solutions.
